Seasonal Events and Festivals in Albuquerque You Shouldn’t Miss: Fall and Winter Part 2

Hello, festival enthusiasts! Albuquerque’s vibrant celebration scene continues into the cooler months with a variety of exciting events and festivals. Here’s a guide to some of the must-see seasonal events and festivals in Albuquerque during the fall and winter.

Fall: Hot Air Balloons and Cultural Celebrations

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The highlight of Albuquerque’s fall season is undoubtedly the International Balloon Fiesta, held in early October at Balloon Fiesta Park. This nine-day event is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, drawing pilots and spectators from around the globe. Hundreds of colorful balloons fill the sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The Mass Ascension, where all the balloons launch simultaneously at dawn, is a must-see event. Evening balloon glows, where the balloons are lit up against the night sky, and fireworks add to the magical experience. With a wide range of activities including balloon rides, chainsaw carving competitions, and food vendors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Watching the balloons with a cup of hot cocoa is one of my favorite fall traditions.

New Mexico State Fair

In September, the New Mexico State Fair at Expo New Mexico brings together the best of the state’s agriculture, arts, and entertainment. From rodeos and livestock shows to carnival rides and concerts, there’s something for everyone. The fair also features a wide array of exhibits showcasing everything from local arts and crafts to agricultural innovations. Don’t forget to indulge in fair food favorites like green chile cheeseburgers, funnel cakes, and deep-fried everything! The vibrant atmosphere and diverse attractions make it a quintessential fall event. I have a tradition of riding the Ferris wheel and enjoying the view of the fairgrounds from above.

Winter: Holiday Lights and Festive Cheer

River of Lights

The holiday season in Albuquerque wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the River of Lights at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden. Running from late November through December, this enchanting event features millions of twinkling lights and dazzling displays. Stroll through the gardens, sip hot cocoa, and get into the holiday spirit with friends and family. The light displays, many of which are animated, create a magical winter wonderland that delights visitors of all ages. Special nights often include live music, crafts, and visits with Santa Claus. Walking through the sparkling garden with my loved ones is a cherished winter activity.

Old Town Holiday Stroll

Kick off the holiday season with the Old Town Holiday Stroll in early December. This festive event includes the lighting of the giant Christmas tree in the plaza, live music, luminarias, and shopping. The historic charm of Old Town combined with holiday decorations creates a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for an evening out. Local shops and galleries stay open late, offering unique gifts and holiday treats. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the holiday season and support local businesses. I love wandering through the luminaria-lit streets, soaking in the festive spirit.

As the seasons change, Albuquerque continues to shine with an array of exciting events that celebrate the city’s rich culture and community spirit. From the awe-inspiring hot air balloons at the Balloon Fiesta to the magical holiday lights of the River of Lights, fall and winter in Albuquerque are truly enchanting. These festivals not only offer fun and entertainment but also create lasting memories with loved ones. So bundle up, embrace the cooler weather, and join in the celebrations that make Albuquerque a wonderful place to be year-round. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
