Day Trip to Southern New Mexico: White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and Pistachio Land

If you’re looking to explore the southern part of New Mexico in one day, it’s a busy but rewarding itinerary. This day trip covers three must-see attractions: the surreal beauty of White Sands National Park, the underground wonder of Carlsbad Caverns, and a fun stop at Pistachio Land. Make sure to start early to make the most of your day.

Start your journey from a central location like Alamogordo, which is close to White Sands and gives you a good starting point to reach all the stops on this packed day.

Morning: White Sands National Park
Begin your morning at White Sands National Park, located about 20 minutes from Alamogordo. Arrive as early as possible to enjoy the cooler temperatures and the beautiful light that enhances the surreal beauty of the dunes. Take a stroll along the Interdune Boardwalk or the Playa Trail for a quick walk. For a bit more adventure, hike the Alkali Flat Trail or rent a sled and glide down the soft gypsum sand. Spend around 1.5 to 2 hours exploring before heading to your next stop.

Mid-Morning: Pistachio Land
On your way out of Alamogordo, make a quick pit stop at Pistachio Land, home of the world’s largest pistachio. Snap a photo with the giant pistachio statue, then head inside for a tasting tour. Sample fresh pistachios, flavored nuts, and even pistachio ice cream. The store also has a variety of souvenirs and New Mexico-made goods. Spend around 30 to 45 minutes here before hitting the road.

Afternoon: Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Drive southeast toward Carlsbad Caverns, which will take about 2.5 hours. Upon arrival, head straight to the Visitor Center to get your tickets. If time permits, join the ranger-guided tour of the Big Room, the largest underground chamber in North America. The self-guided tour is also excellent, with paved paths leading you through massive stalactites, stalagmites, and other incredible formations. Plan to spend about 2 to 3 hours inside the caverns.

Evening: Return Drive and Wrap-Up
After exploring Carlsbad Caverns, grab a quick bite in Carlsbad or stop at a roadside diner along the way back. The return trip will take a couple of hours, depending on your starting point. If you still have daylight, you can take in the beautiful desert scenery on your way back, making a few stops for photos.

This day trip covers some of Southern New Mexico’s most unique attractions, offering a blend of natural wonders and local charm. Make sure to pack snacks, plenty of water, and a camera to capture the memories of this unforgettable journey!
