Exploring Albuquerque’s Natural Marvels: A Hiker’s Guide to Adventure and Tranquility

Hiking is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise and wow are there options for all levels of enthusiasts. I have always been fascinated by the landscapes and outdoor adventures that make Albuquerque an even awesomer place to live. Is awesomer a word? Well it is now!

So, whether you are seeking a breathtaking view or just want an adventure with vibrant landscapes, Albuquerque has a trail or space for you. Join me as I share my favorite spots that will make you call Albuquerque not just a place to live, but a place to enjoy nature in so many ways.

Cibola National Forest & Elena Gallegos Park

First on our list is the Cibola National Forest and Elena Gallegos Park, a two for one that provides a gateway to Albuquerque’s stunning natural beauty. With breathtaking views and an array of trails, these spots are perfect for hiking enthusiasts and casual walkers alike. The forest and park area boast diverse flora and fauna, making every visit a new discovery. These reserves were first established in the late 1800s and early 1900s to protect natural resources, such as watersheds, trees, and soils. Don’t forget to plan ahead even though everything is close by. I suggest going to their website to get the most up to date information for closures or any items of concern.

Challenging Trails for the Avid Hiker

For who wants to test themselves, Albuquerque doesn’t disappoint. Trails like the South Piedra Lisa and Embudito Canyon Loop offer more challenging hikes with rewarding views. The La Luz Trail, my favorite trail in town, in particular, is renowned for its length and the rugged terrain that challenges even seasoned hikers. These trails not only test your endurance but also provide a unique opportunity to witness the stunning landscapes that define Albuquerque. There are two trails for La Luz, one of which is secret and more challenging but faster to the crest. If you are not used to the elevation, take it slow and bring your inhaler, if applicable. No matter the difficulty you chose, it is well worth the energy and effort, as you will be rewarded with the most beautiful sunsets, which will envelope you with rays of warmth and pink hues, literally coloring you in the same light as they color the the Sandia Mountains, or as they are known in English, the watermelon mountains.

Rio Grande Nature Center State Park

The Rio Grande Nature Center is a well maintained place and is a gem within the city’s limits. It offers a tranquil escape with its lush gardens, ponds, and extensive wetlands. It’s a sanctuary for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, with educational exhibits that delve into the region’s rich ecology, geology, and history. The park’s trails meander through serene landscapes, making it the best spot for a walk and picnic. There are things I suggest watching out for. Most bicyclists are courteous and will ring their bell, but more caution is always best as they might not see you. Mosquitos come out at night but bug sprays are generally effective. Lastly, if you go in the evening, bring a light source as the tree coverage makes it harder to see and I don’t want you to trip and fall!

Elena Gallegos Open Space

Elena Gallegos Open Space, one of my absolute favorite places, stands on the eastern edge of Albuquerque, presenting a vast expanse of natural beauty set against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains. This 640-acre park is a hub for hikers, bikers, and equestrians, featuring a network of multi-use trails that weave through the picturesque terrain. That’s right. 640 acres. It is a popular spot for picnics, offering covered areas where you can have a relaxing time and immerse yourself in spectacular views. I suggest going multiple times and choosing different times or days to see the open space’s energy and vibe be totally different than the previous visit.
